Sometimes it takes decades of history, celebrity guests and local legendmaking to deem a hotel cool. Other times it’s imaginative use of old spaces like train stations and sharecroppers’ shacks, or filling your lobby with quizzical contemporary art.
Michael Toya is following in the footsteps of his ancestors. The Jemez Pueblo artist braved the elements for three months as he completed a large-scale mural on the outside of the Nativo Lodge in Albuquerque.

Nativo Lodge is thrilled to announce an eye-catching façade refresh featuring a large-scale, five-story mural by local artist Michael Toya. A vision of black and gold depicting a blend of Indigenous designs and geometric shapes, the mural will highlight centuries of Puebloan culture and the spirit of New Mexico. The installation is currently underway and slated to be completed in 2022.
